Before this one, I’ve read 3 of Nouwen’s discern,ent, all of them enchanting, fascinating and down to the ground. It also offers a look at how Nouwen “practiced what he preached” by detailing some of the ways Nouwen himself discerned Christ’s presence in his life and led him on his own journey. Life-giving and beautiful, yet practical and wise, he invites all those who doubt, feel lost, wounded or broken to discover the beating heart of love at the center of world.
Where they were more “instructional” sounding in nature, this one was much more personal and I would forget at times that it wasn’t his autobiography. So again, the practice of discernment is the practice of listening; it’s more an act of submission rather than discovering the route of more control.

His spirituality was influenced by many, notably by his friendship with Jean Vanier. I found that nouwdn anger and my desire to be special and to be admired all bubbled up in my times of solitude. It is a helpful book for anyone considering discernment in its many guises and connects the reader with the spirit of Nouwen’s teachings on the subject.
