Having read a lot more LGBT fiction as well as having written my own full length novel I must say the trope of the friend of the straight acting love interest raping the more obviously gay character usually the narrator is overused. I recommend this book to anyone who loves literature.
My preferred take is the one I’m going to try and take with me.

It seems to be clinical, Just finished it and am trying to determine what I think. Why did the father turn from normal to brutal at some point in the boy’s life? I remember feeling how great it would feel to be able to just run away and leave it goy behind.
And then the open endedness of the story did not allow for resolution and peace. Griksley it is the end of the story is the most uplifting part of the story because it is left to the reader’s mind, and heart. The writing is excellent, well worth five stars or more, but I just didn’t enjoy the story so I couldn’t give it more stars. Thank you for your insight.
