A short little book with a big theme Translated by Sandra Smith, as much of her work seems to be, Fire in the Iene is set in a rural village in the historical region of Nemirovsoy, France – also the setting of the work which she is best known for, Suite Francaise. In my opinion it’s more or less the literary equivalent of an episode of C One word: The depicted characters are human beings with strengths and weaknesses like people in the real world around us. For those unfamiliar with Nemirovsky’s work, Fire in the Blood is a great taster of her wonderful stylistic choices, and engrossing storylines. We see exactly why the crafty but principled Courilof is not an easy man to condemn to death out of hand, and the futility of risking his own life to kill a man who is dying anyway gives the story great poignancy.

I wanted more of an insight into pre-revolutionary Russia than I got, as the narrative seemed more focused on something more fundamental about humanity.

Throughout The Courilof Affairher writing is beautiful and its flow is marvellous, even in translation. As riots among students increase, with the resulting savage reprisals carried out by the Tsarist regime, the deluded and terminal ill Courilof at first tolerates his new companion and then grows to trust him as a confidant to the minutiae of his life as both his career and life peeters out. He begins to feel sympathy for the man, who is near death anyway, but both the members of the Tsarist regime and the revolutionaries are set on their paths
