Do they miss the thing by waiting for it? These characters and their actions come to form a hierarchy of agency. Reality and imagination commence to overlap; it is either a descent into madness or an ascent towards truth.

When the spider shows their imminent presence, Kraner might beat his head that he could have escaped with the money if not for the dumb head Futaki. Well, Krasznahorkai’s works are not exactly cheerful and living behind the Iron Curtain certainly did not help. But we do not depend on their eyes alone. First published in Hungary in this cleverly constructed, often exhilarating, but relentlessly bleak rkasznahorkai is now something of a cult classic.

One stick of dynamite per jacket. For others, the arrival of spiders should exactly coincide when they finally understand the ploy neatly executed by Irimias. Soon, the time-line has caught up again, this time with the sound of those bells we remember from the opening page. Is watantango all up for Futaki?
Krasznahorkai has given this circle of hell its own USP: At one point the wind moves through the trees satantaango a “helpless hand lzszlo through a dusty book for some vanished main clause”; the reader feels something comparable. He seems to be the last gasp of entrepreneurship in this universe, and feels that the business is hanging by a thread. Just read some of the sentences out loud. His writing operates on a principle of accumulation.
Nothing feels right either to them or the captain, and as for the reader…. And it’s funny, krasznahokrai so. It is krasznayorkai though, when a child with a learning disability, from a family that would have had social work involvement in a better-organised community, kills the family cat and then herself.
But, like so many others in the novel, his sister is awaiting some magical or religious event. I allowed myself to be carried away by his words, by the rhythm of his long, winding phrases. Or are we doomed to live through the same couple of days over and over?
